Hundreds turn out for big Christmas Lights Switch-On in Morpeth

19 November 2013

Hundreds of people enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of festive entertainment in Morpeth on Saturday as the brand new Christmas lights at Sanderson Arcade were switched on.

The mayor of Morpeth Cllr Joan Tebbutt was joined by the young winner of the Arcade’s Christmas Smiles competition Lilly Madine as well as a few other familiar faces to switch on the lights and launch the Christmas shopping period in the town.

The lights were also switched on in the Market Place just a few minutes earlier and a packed afternoon of entertainment was arranged across the town to celebrate the big Switch-On.

A beautiful traditional Christmas tree is the centrepiece of the Arcade’s new decorations with stunning decorations along the gallery all finished off with a beautiful red bow at both entrances to the centre. A red carpet has also been installed to welcome the centre’s shoppers in the run up to Christmas.

The lights came on at 5.15pm on Saturday during a Capital FM Roadshow which was hosted by Rob Howard.

The local competition winner Lilly was given a special Christmas hamper for her family to enjoy as well as tickets for the pantomime in Newcastle next month. Ten runners up who emailed their best Christmas Smiles to the Arcade also had the chance to have tea with Santa.

Lily’s mum Louise said: “Lilly had a really fab afternoon, it was such a special treat for her, meeting Santa and getting to switch the lights on which look really lovely, she loved everything about it.”

To mark the switch on event the centre has also launched its own Charity Christmas cards with all proceeds going to the Sick Children’s Trust which can be bought from the Arcade’s Beadles and at some outlets at Sanderson Arcade.

Centre Manager Medi Parry said: “We had a fantastic event on Saturday, the whole town really got in the Christmas spirit and it was great to have one big day for Morpeth with all the lights switched on at the same time.

“We’ve had some really lovely comments about our Christmas display here at Sanderson Arcade and we are really delighted with how our new decorations look.”

There are lots of events coming up at Sanderson Arcade over the next few weeks, including a visit from some real reindeers and special Sunday shopping events throughout December. Don’t forget to visit the Arcade website for more details at www.sandersonarcade.co.uk.
